)It was a normal summer night. Humidity hung in the thick air. I couldn’t go to sleep, partly because of my cold and partly because of my expectations for the next day. My mum had said that tomorrow was going to be a surprise. Sweat stuck to my aching body. Finally, gathered enough strength to sit up. I looked out of my small window into the night. There was a big bright moon hanging in the sky, giving off a magic light. I couldn’t stand the pressure anymore, so I did what I always do to make myself feel better. I went to the bathroom and picked up my toothbrush and toothpaste. I cleaned my teeth as if there was no tomorrow. Back and forth, up and down. Then I walked downstairs to look for some signs of movement, some life. Gladiator, my cat, frightened me as he meowed his sad song. He was on the old orange couch, sitting up on his front legs, waiting for something to happen. He looked at me as if to say “I’m lonely, pet me. I need a good hug.” Even the couch begged me to sit on it. In one movement I settled down onto the soft couch. This couch represented my parents’ marriage, my birth, and hundreds of other little events. As I held Gladiator, my heart started beating heavily. My mind was flooded with question: What’s life? Am I really alive? Are you listening to me? Every time I moved my hand down Gladiator’s body, I had a new thought; each touch sang a different song. I forgot all about the heat and the next day’s surprise. The atmosphere was so full of warmth and silence that I sank into its arms. Falling asleep with the big cat in my arms, I felt all my worries slowly move away.(本题10.0分) 1.(单选题)The weather that night was probably ________.(本题2.0分) A.freezing B.fine C.rainy D.cloudy The author could not go to sleep partly because ________.(本题2.0分) A.it was too cold B.it was too humid C.he had a cold D.he had a fever The author kept brushing his teeth so as to _________.(本题2.0分) A.whiten his teeth B.soothe his toothache C.relieve himself of the pressure D.shake off the cold Gladiator was the name of __________.(本题2.0分) A.a movie B.a song C.a couch D.a pet What may the “couch” in the passage symbolize?(本题2.0分) A.Happy memories. Differences in American schools compared with those found in the majority of other countries lie in the fact that education here has long been intended for everyone — not just for a privileged elite. Schools are expected to meet the needs of every child, regardless of ability, and also the needs of society itself. This means that public schools offer more than academic subjects.  It surprises many people when they come here to find high schools offering such courses as typing, sewing, repair of radio, computer programming or driver training, along with traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, history, and languages. Students choose their curricula depending on their interests, future goals, and level of ability. The underlying goal of American education is to develop every child to the utmost of his or her own possibilities, and to give each one a sense of civic and community consciousness. Schools have traditionally played an important role in creating national unity and “Americanizing” the millions of immigrants who have poured into this country from many different backgrounds and origins. Schools still play a large role in the community, especially in the small towns. The approach to teaching may seem unfamiliar to many, not only because it is informal, but also because there is not much emphasis on learning facts. Instead, Americans try to teach their children to think for themselves and to develop their own intellectual and creative abilities.  Students spend much time, learning how to use resource materials, libraries, statistics and computers. Americans believe that if children are taught to reason well and to research well, they will be able to find whatever facts they need throughout the rest of their lives. Knowing how to solve problems is considered more important than the accumulation of facts.(本题10.0分) 1.(单选题)Which of the following best states the goal of American education?(本题2.0分) A.To train every student to be a person of integrity. Almost everyone who studies, lives or works abroad experiences some degree of culture shock. This period of cultural adjustment involves everything from getting used to the food and language to learning how to use the telephone. No matter how patient and flexible you are, adjusting to a new culture can, at times, be difficult and frustrating. It is easy to get lost, depressed and homesick. You may even want to go back home! Donˇt panic  these are all totally normal reactions and you are not alone. Sometimes it is hard to remember why you decided to leave home. You are on an adventure  a wonderful opportunity to grow and learn  but it does not always seem that way. Although you cannot avoid culture shock entirely, we have a number of tips that will help you get through difficult moments: 冘 Start a journal of the new things you come across every day and your reactions to your new home. Writing things down will help you keep them in perspective, and are funny to look back on! 冘 Never confuse your ability to speak the new language with your intelligence; it is easy to feel stupid and get down on yourself, but there is no reason to. It takes everyone some time to adjust and become comfortable with a new language. 冘 Be physically active! Walk, swim, run, play tennis or do some other physical activity you enjoy often. You will feel better, meet new people and keep in shape. 冘 Keep your sense of humor. Try, no matter how hard it is, to see something of value in every new experience and challenge you come across. Laugh now, not just later! 冘 Take advantage of services that your university, church or community offer. Contact a counselor at the International Students Office, a resident advisor if you live in residence halls, someone at your church If you are having a problem with something, tell someone! They will want to help you, and you will feel a lot better having people to support you. )Michael, a typical American, stays at home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in order to connect with the office. After work, he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video recorder, or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn’t talk to any other human beings, and he doesn’t see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his lifestyle is very possible. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off form contact with our fellow human being.  The world of business is one area in which technology is isolating us. Experts say, for example, that many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their jobs at display terminals in their own homes. They would never have to actually see the people they’re dealing with. In addition, the way employees are paid will change. Workers’ salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take our money from their accounts.  Another area that technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now, however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers watch movies in their own living rooms. Gestures and body movements are unconscious forms of expressions and therefore they have a language of their own. We are unaware of our gestures and body movements 99 % of the time, but other people can notice our gestures and movements if they pay attention and may know what they mean. Note that body language applies not only to the interviewer but also to the interviewee. Also note that these gestures may happen throughout the conversation and they change as the conversation progresses. The objective of paying attention to nonverbal communication is to help you change the direction of the conversation. If the person is showing negative gestures, then you need to change the subject by asking a new question or talking about something else. So, during a job interview, you can watch for the following gestures: Crossed arms  it means that the person is in a defensive and reserved mood. Crossed arms and legs  it means that the person feels very reserved and suspicious. Open arms and hands  it means that the person is open and receptive. Standing before you with his hands inside the pockets  it means he is not sure or feels suspicious. Standing before you with his hands on his hips  it means he is receptive and ready to help you out. Sitting in a chair shaking one of his legs  it means he feels nervous and uncomfortable. His eyes are downcast and face turned away  it means he is not interested in what you are saying. The palm of the hand holding or stroking his chin  it means he is in an evaluating position and being critical. Leaning back in his chair with both hands clasped behind his head  it means he is in an analytical mood, but it is also a gesture of superiority. Rubbing or touching his nose when answering a question  it means he is not telling the complete truth. Maintaining good eye contact and he smiles in a relaxed and happy way  it means he is definitely receptive to you.(本题10.0分) 1.(单选题)99% of the time, we ______________.(本题1.0分) A.pay no attention to our gestures and body movements.
