. (阅读理解题)阅读理解 Have a Good Think You want to keep young, sit down and have a good think. This is the research finding of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise, and as a result, we are getting old soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa at Tokyo National University wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age, and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down. With a team of researcher, he set about measuring brain volumes of a thousand people of different ages and different jobs. Computer technology enabled the researched to get most exact measurements ofthe volume of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with intellect and feeing, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls tasks like eating and breathing, does not contract with age. Contraction of front and side parts----as cells die off----seen in some subjects in their thirties, but it was still not evident in some sixty----and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction----using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. “Those with least possibility,” said Matsuzawa, “are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as likely to have contracting brain as farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants”. (1). (阅读理解题)阅读理解 Exercise is one of the few factors with a positive role in long-term maintenance of body weight. Unfortunately, that message has not gotten through to the average American, who would rather try switching to “light” beer and low-calorie bread than increase physical exertion. The Center for Disease Control, for example, found that fewer than one-fourth of overweight adults who were trying to shed pounds said they were combining exercise with their diet. In rejecting exercise, some people may be discouraged too much by caloric-expenditure charts; for example, one would have to briskly walk three miles just to work off the 275 calories in one delicious Danish pastry (小香饼) . 阅读理解 My Chocolate Last Thursday, after doing all the family shopping in the town, I wanted a rest before catching the train, so I bought a newspaper and some chocolate and went to the station coffee shop—that cheap, self-service place with long tables to sit at. I put my heavy bag down on the floor, put the newspaper and chocolate on the table to keep a place and went to get a cup of coffee. When I came back with a cup of coffee, there was someone in the next seat. It was one of those customers—a young man, with dark glasses and torn clothes and hair colored bright red at the front. Not so unusual these days. What did surprise me was that he’d started to eat my chocolate. Naturally, I was annoyed. However, to avoid trouble—really I was rather uneasy about him—I just looked down at the front page of the newspaper, tasted my coffee and took a bit of chocolate. The boy looked at me closely. Then he took a second piece of my chocolate. I would hardly believe it. Still I didn’t dare to start an argument. When he took a third piece, I felt more angry than uneasy. I thought, “Well, I shall have the last piece” and I got it The boy gave me a strange look, and then stood up. As he left he shouted out, “This woman is mad!” Everyone stared. That was embarrassing enough, but it was worse when I finished my coffee and got ready to leave. My face went red——as red as his hair when I realized I’d made a mistake.
